Bostjan: Well ... Škoda name is is acctualy since 1925 when the brand name Laurin & Klement was replaced with the new name. Founders of the original factory were Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement. Laurin & Klement brand name is from ~ 1899 or so... that brand name was highly reputated and the Chech quality continued with the Škoda... which was originaly factory with the production of machine guns. "Škoda" really means "Damage" ... in Slovenian language ;)

buscape: Hey Bostjan, I didn't know that Škoda had better reputation than Mercedes before WWII. BTW, Škoda is Škoda because of surname of Emil Škoda - founder of the company.

Bostjan: Did you know that Škoda was more reputated car brand name than Mercedes before II. WW ? Later it was a synonim for a bad car... "Škoda" translated to english means "Damage" (lol). Nowadayds Škoda cars are again good cars... and no so cheap anymore.
